The Different Fastening Metals and Coatings

Powder Coated Fasteners
Powder coating is the process of spraying finely milled particles and resin to create a smooth cover permanently bonded to the fasteners surface. As the coating seals to the metal it gives a protective, tough and robust surface. This will avoid fading and minor damage to the cover of the fastener. This coating makes these fasteners ideal for use in aesthetic applications, like furniture, roofing screws, cladding, vehicles and external panels.

Zinc Plated
Zinc plating (also known as electro-galvanising) is a process where zinc is applied by using an electrical current.
A zinc coating will be shiny and smooth and is ideal for dry, protected environments.
Zinc coating does not provide as much rust protection as rust resistant Hot Dip Galvanized (HDG), but it does give an attractive finish and longevity to the fastener. FDG stocks Zinc plated bolts, setscrews, coach bolts, and many other Zinc plated fasteners.
Hot Dip Galvanized
Dip Galvanized coating is relatively maintenance-free and provides excellent corrosion protection to steel structures
Steel fasteners are dipped in a hot bath of zinc, which is a particularly effective way to form a protective layer of zinc on the fastener, offering an coverage, durability and defence against corrosion, resulting in longevity of the fastener.
FDG has a large range of galvanized rivets, galvanized anchors, galvanized nuts, galvanized washers, galvanized bolts and much more.
Stainless Steel Fasteners
For strong, stable and anti-corrosive fasteners look no further than stainless steel fasteners. This rust-resistant metal is ideal for use in outdoor fastening applications and seaside construction.
For fasteners used in marine environments, within 5kms of the sea, it is best to use stainless steel grade 316, which gives better protection against the external elements.

Nylon
Nylon fasteners are lightweight, tough, resistant to corrosion and impervious to wear and tear.
Often used as a barrier between conflicting materials, this reduces the chance of electrolysis between them.
Nylon bolts are ideal for outside use, electrical insulation and can be used with particleboard, rubber, metal, wood, and other plastic items.
Brass
Brass is a mixture (alloy) of Copper and Zinc. Brass fasteners are anti-corrosive, water resistant and work well for outside applications. Due to these properties brass screws are often used in marine environments for long term, low maintenance applications.
Brass fasteners are ideal for aesthetic applications, especially for use in woodworking due to its color, as brass will discolor over time to create a rustic look.
FDG stock a range of brass fasteners including screws, nuts and washers.
